What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown (often called a “cap”) is a custom-made covering that fits over the entire visible portion of your tooth. It acts as a protective helmet, reinforcing the tooth’s structure and preventing further damage.

According to the American Dental Association, crowns are a versatile solution used to:

  • Strengthen a weak or cracked tooth.
  • Restore a broken or severely worn tooth.
  • Support a dental bridge holding it in place.
  • Cover a dental implant.
  • Improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth.

Types of Crowns We Offer

We believe in giving you options that fit your specific needs and budget. During your exam, Dr. Nord will discuss which material is best for your unique situation:

  • Ceramic & Porcelain: These are the most popular choice for front teeth because they can be color-matched perfectly to your natural enamel for a beautiful, seamless finish.
  • Zirconia: Known for their incredible strength, zirconia crowns are ideal for back teeth that endure heavy chewing pressure while still looking natural.
  • Gold: While less common today for aesthetic reasons, gold remains an extremely durable and conservative option for back molars.

The Crown Procedure

Getting a crown typically takes two visits to our Regency Drive office:

  1. Preparation: Dr. Nord gently shapes the tooth and takes precise digital impressions. You will leave this appointment with a temporary crown to protect your tooth.
  2. Placement: About two weeks later, you will return to have your permanent, custom-made crown permanently bonded in place. We ensure the fit and bite are perfect before you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. We use local anesthesia to ensure the area is completely numb during the preparation appointment. Dr. Nord has a gentle touch and will make sure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.

How long do dental crowns last?

On average, a dental crown lasts between 10 and 15 years, though many last much longer with proper care. Avoiding habits like grinding your teeth or chewing ice can help extend the life of your crown significantly.

How do I care for my crown?

Treat your crown just like a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, floss daily (paying attention to the gumline), and keep up with your regular dental cleanings and exams to prevent decay around the edges of the crown.
